An Idiots guide to making themes

This is an attempt at trying to explain how to adjust your site theme.

  • It has been written by somebody who hasn't got a clue about writing code.
  • It is designed to be help to those who haven't got a clue about code.
  • I have no idea if this is going to be helpful, or a hindrance :-)
  • It is not tested on all browsers!
  • It is intended as a "primer", not as a "font of all knowledge"

All work carried out within these pages has been developed using.

Firefox 2: http://www.mozilla.com/

Web developer plugin : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60

Colours used are in words, not hex or RGB values, this has been done, so that you can "see" the code and its action more easily.

For reference i have used:

http://www.free-webmaster-tools.com/colorpicker.htm

The way i have been working on this is to use firefox, with the "edit css" function of the web developer add on. You can edit the code, and you will be able to see the changes made in your browser as you go.
This is how i set the above out

The theme you are viewing now, has been developed using cut and paste, and slight adjustment to, other peoples code. My thanks to them, and all credit to them.

As you start to get your head round this stuff, it is worth exploring W3Schools for more info.

Ok, here we go then, step 1

Note: there are some serious IE6 bugs in this code. So i have a choice, spend hours trying to find the cure, or try and convince IE6 user to either upgrade to IE7 or FireFox

…. Hmmmm…. Er excuse me IE6 user, would you assist me in maintaining my sanity.. by upgrading to IE7 or firefox PLEASE!!!!!
